5 Actors Who Shined in Mediacorp's Latest Drama "Emerald Hill" (Half-time Score)

Updated: Apr 3

Mediacorp's "Emerald Hill" has captivated audiences with its intricate storytelling and stellar performances. This spin-off from the beloved 2008 series "The Little Nyonya" introduces a fresh narrative while retaining the rich Peranakan culture that endeared the original to many. Among the ensemble cast, five actors have delivered particularly noteworthy performances, bringing depth and authenticity to their roles. Here are five that stood out based on the first 10 episodes.

1. Tyler Ten as Bai Ah Li, Zhang Xinniang's friend

Tyler Ten portrays Bai Ah Li, a street-savvy individual and childhood friend of the protagonist, Zhang Xinniang. Ah Li unwavering loyalty and complex emotions are brought to life through Tyler's nuanced performance. His ability to convey the internal conflict of a character torn between love and duty adds a compelling layer to the narrative. Tyler's portrayal has resonated with viewers, marking a significant milestone in his acting career.

Acting Chops: 7/10

The role of Bai Ah Li perfectly fits Tyler's archetype as a rugged, tough, and stoic character. However, this time, Tyler displayed a wider range of expressions and demonstrated greater versatility in his acting as Bai Ah Li.

2. Dawn Yeoh as Kang Si Li, Zhang Jin Quan's wife

Dawn Yeoh takes on the role of Kang Si Li, a pivotal member of the affluent Zhang family. Her character embodies grace and resilience, navigating the intricate dynamics of Peranakan society. Dawn's portrayal captures the essence of a woman striving to balance familial expectations with personal desires. Her performance adds depth to the series, highlighting the societal challenges faced by women in that era. Dawn played well as the spoilt and yet flamboyant wife of Zhang Jin Quan, a role played by Romeo Tan.

Acting Chops: 8.5/10

I was pleasantly surprised by how effortlessly Dawn Yeoh could steal scenes from veteran actors, especially in group settings. Her keen attention to detail, even when she has no lines, truly sets her apart as a remarkable actress. I sincerely hope she earns a Star Award nomination.

3. Chen Liping as Cai Zhu Niang/Ah Zhu, Zhang Xinniang's foster mother

Veteran actress Chen Liping delivers a heartfelt performance as  Cai Zhu Niang, the compassionate foster mother of Zhang Xinniang. Her portrayal exudes warmth and maternal strength, providing a grounding presence amidst the tumultuous events of the series. Chen Liping's experience and depth bring authenticity to the role, making Zhu Niang a beloved character among viewers.

Acting Chops: 8.5/10

Chen Liping’s comeback is truly remarkable. As a veteran actress, she has once again proven her ability to take on any role with ease and authenticity. In fact, she would have been an even better fit as the Zhang family's matriarch, a role currently played by the rather dull and uninspiring Zoe Tay. She is undoubtedly deserving of a Best Supporting Actress award.

4. Jesseca Liu as Li Shu Qin, Zhang Jin He's wife

Jesseca Liu embodies Li Shu Qin, the 'biological mother' of Zhang Xinniang. Her character's journey is fraught with emotional complexities, from the anguish of separation to the joy of reunion. Jesseca's sensitive and layered performance captures the profound maternal bond and the challenges of reconciling past regrets with present realities.

Acting Chops: 8/10

She has been under some controversies towards her rendition of the second daughter in law of the Zhang's family. Netizens took issues on how she reacted and acted after her loss of her son and daughter who went missing. One could argue that some scenes have been cut off or people who loss their kids in the 30s and 40s tend to be non-chalant about it. Nonetheless, Jesseca stood out for her natural and gifted acting craft evident from her on-screen performances.

5. Juin Teh as Ah Yan 阿燕.

Juin Teh portrays Ah Yan, the family and lead maid of Li Shu Qin, played by Jesseca Liu. This was one of her more substantial roles after graduating from Star Search 2019. Juin stood out in some scenes where she sought to defend the interests of her master, Li Shu Qin.

Acting Chops: 7/10

Her acting stood out as natural and convincing. With the right role and imaging, I believe she has what it takes to take on meaty roles that are akin to a lead role for any drama series.

Conclusion

"Emerald Hill" stands as a testament to Mediacorp's commitment to delivering quality storytelling enriched by cultural heritage. The performances of Tyler Ten, Dawn Yeoh, Chen Liping, Jesseca Liu, and Juin Teh have significantly contributed to the series' success, each bringing their unique artistry to the screen. Their portrayals not only honor the legacy of "The Little Nyonya" but also pave the way for future narratives that celebrate Singapore's diverse cultural tapestry
