Located at Bugis Junction, SIFU is one of the newest Hong Kong cafes that have taken up the challenge of serving Hong Kong cuisine, specially tailored to cater to local taste buds.
SIFU, the name of the restaurant makes reference to ‘master’ or ‘teacher’ in Cantonese to pay homage to a master with over thirty years of experience with its signature dishes.
One of their speciality is the freshly-baked pillow buns. You can find them at the bunnery which is right at the entrance of SIFU, enticing diners to grab them for a bite.
These handmade buns come in four fillings, ranging from the traditional Hong Kong-style savoury Char Siew (Roasted Pork) and Hong Kong-style creamy Sweet Custard, to the creative Azuki (Japanese Red Bean) Custard and refreshing Yuzu Cheese. Customers can either choose to order the buns for dine-in with their meal or walk in for over the counter take-away. Each bun is retailed at $1.20 and a box of eight buns at $9.60.
What if you are not so keen about having carbo and you are really just interested in having protein? Lucky for you, SIFU has Caramelised Roasted Ribs ($3.90 per rib).
The SIFU ribs boast a rich caramelised taste on first bite with a delicious, savoury ending on the palate. If you love meat, you can consider getting more of this and go on a protein diet.
Haven’t had enough proteins yet? Try the Pulled Pork Ribs Chinese-style Slider ($4.80) where there’s more caramalised roasted pulled pork and is complemented with some greens. It’s a little like the average Kong Bak Pau.
Beef anyone? How can we resist this? Homemade Beef Stew Rice ($10.80) is another of the specialities at SIFU. This full-flavoured dish of beef, carrots and radish is served with rice and the beef is cooked for six hours to tenderise and absorb the flavours of the herbs and seasoning, leaving it fork-tender and delectable to the taste buds.
Next up is the Signature Roasted Chicken Thigh and Shrimp Dumpling Soup Noodles ($10.80). A special beehoon (a cross between vermicelli and local beehoon) that takes the place of typical egg noodles is topped with dumplings and has a light and tasty broth to compliment it. This is the perfect dish for parents and grandparents who prefer something that is 清甜 (meaning light and moderately sweet).
